He Lu replaced his colleague

He Lu replaced his colleague

In 585 BC, Shoumeng ascended the throne and declared himself king. Wu began to communicate with the Central Plains, learning Zhou rituals, enriching the people, strengthening the military, and the national strength grew stronger day by day. Shoumeng had four sons: Zhu Fan, Yu Ji, Yu Mang, and Ji Zha. His youngest son, Ji Zha, was virtuous and capable, and Shoumeng wished for Ji Zha to inherit the throne. However, Ji Zha believed that this was against ancestral tradition and refused to accept it. In 561 BC, Shoumeng died, and his eldest son, Zhu Fan, inherited the throne. To fulfill his father's wish, Zhu Fan changed the system of primogeniture to "brother succession." In other words, when the older brother died, the throne was inherited by the next younger brother. After Shoumeng's third son, Yu Mang, died, Ji Zha still refused to ascend the throne. According to the system of primogeniture, the throne should have been passed down to Gongzi Guang, the son of Zhu Fan, but Yu Mang's son, Liao, directly inherited the throne from his father.

As the eldest grandson, Gongzi Guang felt dissatisfied and secretly sought out talented individuals, preparing to seize the throne when the opportunity arose.

In 515 BC, King Liao of Wu, taking advantage of the death of King Ping of Chu and the turmoil within Chu, launched a large-scale military campaign against Chu. However, the Chu army cut off his retreat, leaving the country empty. Gongzi Guang seized this excellent opportunity. With the planning and assistance of Wu Zixu, he sent the warrior Zhuan Zhu, disguised as a cook, to hide a sword in a fish. Taking advantage of an invitation to a banquet with King Liao of Wu, Zhuan Zhu assassinated King Liao of Wu. This is the famous historical story of "Zhuan Zhu assassinating King Liao." Thus, Gongzi Guang seized the throne of Wu and became known in history as King Helu of Wu.
